How should I care and maintain my vinyl floors?

Vinyl flooring does not require high maintenance. Neither does it require any specialised knowledge or skill.

However, it doesn't mean vinyl flooring is totally indestructible.

A little effort to care and maintain it on a regular basis will ensure its longevity.

When you move in after installation

1.

Avoid dragging heavy furniture across your vinyl floor

When we first move in, there's a lot of heavy appliances to be moved: dining tables, refrigerator, king-sized beds, washing machines, etc.

Because they are so heavy, there may be a tendency to drag these across the floor. Be aware that this may cause deep scratches in your vinyl floor.

Consider engaging movers, using trolleys, or put out layers of cardboard/plywood and drag furniture on top of them instead.

2.

Put protective coverings on the furniture that will be regularly moved

It isn't much damage if you drag out your dining chair once.

But do that everyday for months, years, and you will most certainly find scuffs and scratches on your vinyl floor.

For furniture that gets moved regularly, such as chairs and small side tables, put protective coverings on their feet. This will prevent them from scratching against the vinyl floors.

Regular cleaning routine

1.

Sweep/vacuum away the dust and dirt

Sweep or vacuum the floor to remove any surface dust, hair or dirt.

To avoid getting too much dirt in your home, place floor mats at your door. The dirt particles will get trapped in the floor mat first, so that lesser dirt gets into your home and floors.

2.

Mop with water

or

mop with a mild mix of floor cleaners and water

Unlike other flooring, there is no grout in vinyl floor tiles (grout is the space between the tiles). Hence, bacteria and dirt cannot get trapped in the grout, and you need not exert any energy at all to clean it.

Nevertheless, you should still be cleaning it regularly. You can simply mop with water (but squeeze out the excess water from the mop first). Or, if you find that the floor is oily/sticky, use a mild mixture of water with your preferred floor cleaner.
